And now for something truly random

While running a work-related Google search just now, I came across something truly…useless.

I briefly debated whether or not to write about it here, because I’m not sure how I feel about it and I don’t like giving free advertising to Web sites I find disagreeable.

So the question became, do I agree or disagree with this site? I couldn’t decide, so I started by writing arguments both for and against the Web site…and it became apparent that I disagree.

In a nutshell, the site is run by a guy who thinks he’s a comedian/actor and has nothing better to do, so he spends a lot of his time pulling large-scale pranks. For instance, he recently flooded a store with a whole bunch of people dressed like employees, which caused a lot of frustration amongst actual staff trying to determine what was going on. They caused chaos in the store, frustrated the managers, wasted the time of police officers, and then left. This is the article I found during my Google search. I read through it, waiting for some positive ending, but there was none.

What I don’t like about this site is that the sole purpose is to cause undue frustration in unsuspecting–and undeserving–people. And as you know, I hate that sort of thing. I’d like to think that we can enjoy ourselves while contributing positively to society (or at least trying to). Problem is, a lot of people in this world take amusement out of causing stress for others…and a lot of people enjoy watching people get stressed out.

It would seem that the creator and followers of this site fall into both categories. They think it’s amusing to use their spare time to waste other people’s time…and I can’t subscribe to that.

Do unto others as you would have done to you…I know I’m not the only person who subscribes to this, but our numbers seem to be faltering.

So why was I initially inclined to find the site amusing? Because as much as the socially conscious person in me dislikes the chaos it creates, the performer/entertainer in me enjoys the spectacle.

But that’s not good enough, and neither is the site. Based on my short read of the site, the creator has the vision to do great things that could be really beneficial to society…but that doesn’t appear to interest him.

And that’s too bad.
